Jean-Pierre Conte approaches charitable giving with the same care he brought to a career in private equity. He doesn’t spread the money thinly. Instead he applies a clear set of rules that decide where his support goes and why.
Conte, the founder and managing partner of the family office Lupine Crest Capital, runs his giving through the J-P Conte Family Foundation, which he established in 2017. He’s described five principles that guide those decisions.
Backing Capable Organizations
Two of the principles concern the groups themselves. Conte looks closely at an organization’s capacity before he commits, checking whether it can actually put a gift to good use. He weighs the quality of its leadership, too, on the view that strong people decide whether a program succeeds.
That discipline mirrors how investors size up a company. A promising mission isn’t enough; the team and the systems behind it have to be sound. A capable staff can turn a modest grant into real change, while a shaky one can waste a large gift, so Conte treats a nonprofit’s management as seriously as a business owner would.
Building Something Permanent
The other principles turn on timing and durability. Conte favors starting early, reaching people before problems harden, and he’d rather build lasting infrastructure than offer short-term relief. His $25 million gift to Colgate University, his alma mater, funds a permanent campus building, the new Conte House.
A final principle keeps the work personal. Conte lets his own values steer his priorities, which is why his foundation concentrates on education, medical research and conservation rather than chasing every cause. A short list, tended closely, is what he trusts to produce real change.
A Focused Portfolio of Causes
Taken together, the five rules push toward depth over breadth. Conte supports a limited number of organizations he can follow closely, and then he stays with them long enough to see whether the work delivers. Concentration lets him judge results in a way scattered giving can’t.
Education, medical research and conservation have stayed the focus since the foundation began. Jean-Pierre Conte returns to those areas because they reward the patient, hands-on approach his principles describe, and because each one unfolds over the kind of long span he’s comfortable funding. He’d rather do a few things thoroughly than many things lightly, and his giving record shows that choice.
